According to Kent Online reports in the past week, the developers of the new Elwick Place development in Ashford town centre are struggling to fill the restaurants. Kent Online quote Stanhope development director Gary Bourne as saying: “We are in discussions with a number of restaurant operators – many of whom are exciting independent businesses – about the opportunity to trade alongside these big brands”.
So is this a great opportunity for Ashford to differ from other town centres by not having the same old selection of big brand ‘restaurants’, a word I use hesitantly?
We have seen what this commercially minded council has done to breath life back into the town centre and of course there is much more to be done, but perhaps the struggles facing the big operators is a golden opportunity for independent businesses.
